I never understood the girlswho had the sweatersand the latest hairdos copied out of magazinesand who were not afraid of snakes.They were the thin-hipped ones who looked goodin straight skirts, like exclamation pointsbehind phrases like "Wow," and "Gee Whiz."

I envied their lemon-scented handsraised to answer asmost as many questionsas I, the ugly duckling class brain, did,with my fat ankles,and ass as soft as a sofa pillow.Valerie Twadell who was Miss La Habraat our August Corn Festivalchased me with worms.
