The Road

My road was once a trail,

Straight, but not too wide;

Bumpy and full of chug holes,

With no shoulder on the sides.
*****
Sometimes while traveling down it,

I would lose control;

Swerve to miss a bump or two,

And end up in a hole.
*****
There was so much obstruction,

That I just could not see;

I’d try to take a short cut,

And run into a tree.
*****
My path just seemed so hopeless,

I wanted to get off;

Park myself along the side,

And play a game of golf.
*****

But you had mercy on me,

And cleared away the trees;

Picked me up and sat me down,

And swatted away the bees.
*****
For my path is like a road now,

The dirt you have paved;

My eyes can see much clearer,

And my soul you have saved.
*****
Now that I’m on the road,

Don’t let me go astray;

Show me the way to go,

And lead me home today.
*****
